Being a beginner is fun, isn’t it?  Regardless of what it is that you are beginning, it is a time when you are excited by all the interesting things that you have to learn and discover.

This is no different for someone who is just starting to learn how to sew.  It is the beginning of a long, patterned, colorful, and creative journey that never quite ends.  And, why would you want it to?  After all, every time you sew, you learn something new about the craft.

Before you get started, you want to have all the tools you’ll need in your sewing kit.  Here’s a pretty solid list of exactly what those are:

Sewing basket

Sewing baskets come in various shapes and sizes and are great for holding everything else mentioned on this list and keeping them organized.

Thread

Cotton thread is perhaps the most essential material needed by anyone who sews.

Fabric

If thread is the most important material for a beginning sewer, then fabric is certainly the runner up.

Scissors

It is best to have scissors that are made specifically to cut fabric and to try not to use them on anything else.

Pins

Glass head pins will almost certainly come in handy on any project that you may find yourself working on.

Tape Measurer

With most of your projects, you will find that you have to be precise and eyeballing it will just not do.  A clear ruler is also a good tool to have for this purpose.

Seam Ripper

This is an excellent tool to help fix things when you make a mistake, which you inevitably will – not because you are a beginner, but because everyone messes up at some point or another.

The more advanced you get, the more your horizons will broaden, allowing room for more techniques and tools in your sewing basket.  For now, this list ought to serve you right.
