DIY costume masks

white plastic craft masks

For elementary aged children, making and producing plays is a great way to get every child engaged and help them break out of their shell. Unfortunately, many children are extremely shy when it comes to public performance and speaking so when making costumes for a play, it is important to understand that the costume is a protective venue for children to express themselves. When it comes to this, nothing gives a child more confidence than having a mask to hide behind.

Materials you will need:

-          Full white plastic craft masks

-          Spray paint

-          Children’s paint

-          Paint brushes

How to make them:

1. Spray paint each mask to give it a base color. Use different colors to distinguish characters and roles. Fluorescent spray paint works very well for this.

2. Give each child a white plastic craft mask and have them write their names on the inside. Labeling their name is an important step otherwise they will all get mixed up.

3. Set each child up with paint and paint brushes and allow them to decorate their masks individually. Make sure each kid understands the specifications for the decoration of their mask otherwise you might end up with a bunch of batman masks.

4. Let each ask dry for a day and then you are ready for your production!

Glitter and glue also works well for decorating, but the main thing with this project is to give each child the confidence to display their masks!
