Budget party tip: Make your own confetti

These days, we’re all looking for ways to save, and there is no better time to do so than when you’re throwing a party. After all, spending a ton of money on a one-night occasion just isn’t practical. If you’re throwing a party where you’ll want to have confetti handy, one easy way to save is by making your own! You’ll not only conserve dough by passing on store-bought confetti; you’ll also keep some pricy fuel in your tank by not making a trip to a party supply store. This is also great for making a last-minute surprise party more festive in a pinch.
Making the confetti
To make your own DIY confetti, simply run sheets of colorful paper through a cross-cut shredder. You can try experimenting with gift wrap, construction paper, scrapbooking paper, pages of an old glossy magazine, stationery, old postcards or greeting cards, comic strips, or any other paper you have around the house.
Incorporating confetti into your party
There are plenty of great ways to incorporate confetti into your party! Here are just a couple you can try:
- For a surprise party: Fill small containers with the confetti and distribute these to your guests. You can use small metal pails, baskets or even Italian cappuccino cups, which are perfect for a dressier affair where red party cups (you know the ones) just won’t do. When your guest of honor arrives, he’ll be happily ambushed with a flurry of bright pieces of confetti.
- For a kid’s party: If you’re planning a party for a kid or kid at heart, you can purchase a premade piñata – or better yet, make your own! When you’re filling the piñata with candy, throw in some confetti for a fun, unexpected surprise.
